Culture
(In Psychology) a set of learned values, beliefs, customs, and behavior that is shared by a group of interacting individuals.
Culturally Congruent Care
Care that fits the people’s valued life patterns and set of meanings generated from the people themselves. Sometimes this differs from the professionals’ perspective on care.
Cultural Competence
Process in which the healthcare professional continually strives to achieve the ability and availability to work effectively with individuals, families, and communities.
Emic Worldview
An insider or native perspective.
Etic Worldview
An outsider’s perspective
Stereotypes
A generalization about a form of behavior, an individual, or a group.
Health Disparities
“A particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage” (Healthy People, 2020)
Social Determinants of Health
Reflect social factors and the physical conditions in the environment in which people are born, live, learn, play, work, and age (Healthy People, 2020).
Acculturation
(1) The process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of a different population group. (2) The modification of the culture of a group resulting from association with another group.
Assimilation
The process of incorporating nutritive material into living tissue; the end stage of the nutrition process, after digestion and absorption or simultaneous with absorption.
Cultural Assessment
A systematic and comprehensive examination of the cultural care values, beliefs, and practices of individuals, families, and communities.
Health Literacy
Extent to which people have the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services to make informed decisions about their health.
