American Nurses Association
The national professional association of registered nurses in the United States. It was founded in 1896 to improve standards of health and the availability of health care. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards for nursing, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public. ANA publications include American Nurse, Publications list, American Nurse Today, and Online Journal of Nursing.
Code of Ethics
A statement encompassing the set of rules based on values, and standards of conduct to which practitioners of a profession are expected to confrom.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
The most independently functioning nurse. An APRN has a master’s degree or doctor of Nursing (DNP) degree in Nursing; advanced education in pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment; and a certification and expertise in a specialized area of practice.
Clinical Nurse Specialist
An APRN who has graduate preparation (master’s degree or doctorate) in nursing and is an expert clinition in a specialized area of practice.
Nurse Practitioner
An APRN who has graduate preparation (master’s degree or doctorate) in nursing. NPs provide primary, acute, and specialty health care to patients of all ages and in all types of health care settings.
Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
An APRN who has graduate preparation (master’s degree or doctorate) in nursing, is also educated in midwifery, and is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwifes (ACNM).
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesist (CRNA)
An APRN with advanced education from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.
Nurse Educator
Works primarily in schools of nursing, staff development departments of health care agencies, and patient education departments.
Nurse Administrator
Responsible for management of the nursing staff in a health care agency.
Nurse Researcher
Conducts evidence-based practice, performance improvement, an research to improve nursing care and further define and expand the scope of nursing practice.
Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)
The goal of the QSEN project is to meet the challenge of preparing future nurses and advanced practice nurses to have knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety pf the health care systems in which they work.
Genomics
Study of the genes in the human genome and there interaction with other genes and the physical environment and their influence of cultural and psychosocial factors.
Registered Nurse (RN)
A nurse who has completed a course of study at a state approved school of nursing and passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). A registered Nurse may use the initial RN after a signature. RNs are licensed to practice by individual states.
Continuing Education
Involves educational programs offered by universities, hospitals, states nurses’ association, professional nursing organizations, and educational and health care institutions.
In-Service Education
They are instruction or training programs provided by a health care agency or institution.
