Communication
Any process in which a message containing information is transferred, especially from one person to another, by any of a number of media.
Stereotypes
A generalization about a form of behavior, an individual, or a group.
Referent
Factor that motivates a person to communicate with another individual.
Sender
In communication theory, the person by whom a message is encoded and sent.
Receiver
(In communication theory) The person or persons to whom a message is sent.
Message
Information sent or expressed by sender in the communication process.
Feedback
Information produced by a receiver and perceived by a sender that informs the sender of the receiver’s reaction to the message.
Environment
All of the many factors, as physical and psychologic, that influence or affect the life an d survival of a person.
Autonomy
The quality of having the ability or tendency to function independently.
Assertiveness
Behavior directed toward claiming one’s rights without denying those of others.
Therapeutic Communication
A process in which the nurse concisely influences a client or helps to a better understanding through verbal or nonverbal communication. Therapeutic communication involves the use of specific strategies that encourage the patient to express feelings and ideas and that convey acceptance and respect.
Active Listening
The act of alert intentional hearing, interpretation, and demonstration of an interest in what a person has to say through verbal signal, nonverbal gestures, and body language.
Empathy
The ability to recognize and to some extent share the emotions and state of mind of another and to understand the meaning and significance of that person’s behavior. It is an essential quality for effective psychotherapy.
