soviet publications banned in late 80s
- demonstration in 1989 which called for a change in government system
- gorbachev visited in 1989 october to announced the ussr wouldn’t get involved in internal affairs
- 1 million people demonstrated in nov 4 1989 demanding for free elections and democracy
- people moved to hungary after free elections were announced
- border between east/west germany opened on nov 9
- east and west reunited by october 1990

collapse of the soviet union
A
gorbachev popular in the west, but criticised in the ussr
- coup organised by gang of 8 on 19 august 1991 which removed gorbachev from power
- new government lasted for 3 days led by yeltsin
- gorbachev returned on 21st and resumed position, but lost popularity
- introduced more freedom for soviet republics but they wanted full independence and estonia latvia and lithuania declared themselves independent in 1990
- soviet union dissolved on 25 december 1991

- george bush declared that the cold war was over at a malta summit in 1989
