Criteria Schizophrenia
- 2 of the following: Delusions, Hallucinations, Disorganized speech, Disorganized behaviour, Negative symptoms
- Functioning in work, relationships has declined
- At least 6 months

Persecutory delusions
Belief that people plot against them
Thought insertion
Belief that thoughts are not their own but inserted there by external source
Thought broadcasting
Belief that others know what you are thinking
External force
Belief that external force controls feelings and behavior
Grandiose delusions
Exaggerated sense of self-importance, power, knowledge
Ideas of reference
Incorporation of unimportant events within a delusional framework and reading personal significance into trivial activities of others
Negative Symptoms
- Avolition/ Apathy
- Asociality
- Anhedonia, consummatory and anticipatory
- Blunted affect
- Alogia
Schizophreniform disorder
Same symptoms but only max. 6 months
Brief psychotic disorder
Same symptoms but only max. 1 month
Schizoaffective disorder
Mixture of symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorders.
Requires a depressive or manic episode
Delusional disorder
Persistent delusions
Etiology schizophrenia Genetic factors
- Behaviour genetics: Twins at high risk
- Familial high risk study: Offspring of parents with schizophrenia at high risk
- Molecular genetics: Multiple common genes between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (DRD2 and COMT)
Etiology Schizophrenia Dopamine theory
Dopamine, GABA, Glutamate and Serotonin are related to schizophrenia
Enlarged ventricles and reductions of gray matter in PFC and temporal cortex
