An adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and behavioral deviations for organizational participants
Burnout Definition
Consequence of “losing purpose or fulfillment of work”
Distress Definition
Negative Energy caused by something bad
Eustress Definition
Positive caused by something good: related to challenge stressors
Individual Stressors
Individual dispositions; Type A characteristics, personal control, learned helplessness, and psy hardiness
Group Stressors
Interpersonal conflict within the workgroup; Lack of group cohesiveness & lack of social support by 1 or more members.
Organizational Stressors
Macro level factors within the organization, administrative strategies, org structure, professes and working conditions
Extra organizational Stressors
Outside of organization forces and events; Family crisis, relocation, life changes, economic and financial conditions.
What stress is not
not just anxiety, not just nervous tension, not damaging, bad or avoidant
Workaholic Definition
a compulsive need to work at the expense of everything else in one’s life
Personal Control
Employees with a sense of control over work such as participating in decisions have reduced work stress
Type B Characteristics
laid back, patient, take a low key approach
Type A Characteristics
Managers, Salespeople, secretaries
Learned helplessness
Giving up and seeming to accept stressors at work even when a change is better is possible
Intra Individual Conflict
Conflict due to frustration, goal conflict, role conflict and ambiguity
Psychological Hardiness
Ability to cope successfully with extreme stressors, able to resist stress by providing buffers between themselves and stress
Interpersonal and Intra group Conflict
Type of interactive conflict, personal differences, information deficiency, role incompatibility and environmental stress
Intergroup Conflict
Competition for scarce resources, task interdependence, jurisdictional ambiguity and status struggles
Negotiation Definition
Common mechanism for resolving differences and allocating resources; can be a managerial skill for success.
Distributive Bargaining
Fixed pie mentality focused on who gets biggest slice
Approach- Approach Conflict
where the individual is motivated to approach two or
more positive but mutually exclusive goals
Approach-Avoidance Conflict
where the individual is motivated to approach a goal
and at the same time is motivated to avoid it. The single goal contains both positive
and negative characteristics for the individual.
Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict
where the individual is motivated to avoid two or more
negative but mutually exclusive goals.
