Group Dynamics
Interactions and forces among group members in social situations.
Propinquity
People affiliate with one another due to spatial or geographical proximity
Balance theory
People are attached to one another on the basis of similar attitudes toward common objectives and goals
Exchange theory
where a minimum positive level of an outcome must exist in order for attraction or group affiliation to take place
Forming
Initial stage with uncertainty and confusion; members not sure of purpose, structure, tasks
Storming
Often emotionally charged; Characterized by conflict about roles and duties
Norming
Stage where group settles into cooperation and collaboration
Performing
Fully functioning; Members focused on effective task completion
Adjourning
End of the group for temporary groups; Disbands or has new composition and starts stages over again
Groupthink
Deterioration of mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment that results from in group pressures
Social Loafing
When members reduce their effort and performance levels when acting as part of a group
