Chapter 8- Special Senses Flashcards
Sclera
Fibrous protective layer of eyeball
Choroid
Posterior and blood rich layer of nutritive tunic on the eyeball
Ciliary Body
Attached by sensory ligaments that help constrict and comtract the eyeball opening
Iris
Pigmented round opening
Retina
Absorb light and prevent light from scattering inside the eye.
Blind spot
The area where there are no photoreceptors and cannot see through
Lens
A flexible bi convex crystal-like structure that focuses the light on the retina
Photoreceptors
Neural layer that responds to light
Refracted
When light passes through and its speed changes and light rays bend.
Accomadation
The ability of the eye to focus specifically for close objects
Mechanoreceptors
Receptors that respond to sound and movement
Tympanic cavity
Small, air-filled, mucosa-lined cabpcity within the temporal cavity.
Ossicles
Transmits the vibratory motion of the eardrum to the fluids of the inner ear
Cochlea
A cavity of the inner ear resembling a snail shell.
Vestibule
Is between the semicircular canal and the cochlea
Semicircular Canal
Canals that resemble rollar coasters and are part of the ear.
Macular
Receptors within the membrane sacs of the vestibule
Static equilibrium
The common sense of which way is up and down and the ability to balance with the inclusion of gravity.
Dynamic Equilibrium
Respond to angular or rotary movements of the head rather than to straight-lined movement
Crista ampullaris
Consists of tuft of hair cells covered with gelatinous cap.
Organ of corgi
Which contains the hearing receptors (hair cells)
Chemoreceptors
Receptors for taste and olfaction
Olfactory receptors
Receptors for the sense of smell.
Taste Buds
Specific receptors for the sense of taste
Cornea
Transparent protective layer of eyeball
