Chapter 4- Skin And Body Membranes Flashcards
Mucous Membrane
Composed of epithelium resting on a loose connective tissue membrane (lamina propria)
Cutaneous Membrane
The skin
Serous Membrane
Composed of a layer of simple squamous epithelium resting on a thin layer of areolar connective tissue.
Synovial Membrane
Composed of soft areolar connective tissue and contain no epithelial cells at all.
Integument
Means “covering” or skin
Epidermis
Made up of stratified squamous epithelium that is capable of kertanizing.
Keratinizing
Becoming hard and tough
Dermis
Made up of dense connective tissue. Epidermis and dermis are connected.
Subcutaneous Tissue (Hypodermis)
Is adipose tissue.
Melanin
A pigment that ranges in color from yellow to brown to black.
Exocrine Glands
Release their secretions to the skin surface via ducts.
Sebaceous glands
Oil glands that are found all over the skin except the palms of hands and soles of feet.
Sweat glands (Sudoriferous)
Widely distributed in the skin.
Hair follicles
Compound structures.
Nail
A scalelike modification of the epidermis that corresponds to a hoof or claw on animals.
