Chapter 8: Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the highlighted area in the picture called?

Anterior cranial fossa
What is the highlighted area in the picture called?

Middle cranial fossa
What is the highlighted area in the picture called?

Posterior cranial fossa
What is the most complex part of the skeleton?
Skull
How many bones are in the skull?
22 bones- joined together by sutures (immovable joints)
Name the cavaties in the skull
- cranial cavity (brain case)
- orbits (eye sockets)
- nasal cavity
- oral (buccal) cavity
- middle- and inner-ear cavities
- paranasal sinus
Define foramina
holes that allow passage for nerves and blood vessels
Paranasal sinuses
- Frontal
- Ethmoid
- Maxillary
- Sphenoid
- Lined by mucous membrane and are air-filled
Act as chambers that add resonance to the voice; lighten the skull

What is the region of the skeleton(picture) called?

Axial skeleton
What is this section of the skeleton(picture) called

Appendicular skeleton
What separates brain from bones?
Meninges(membrane)
What is the thickest membrane? Where is it?
Dura mater in the cranium cavity(skull/spinal cord)
What are the 2 parts of the cranial cavity?
- calvaria (skullcap)
- cranial base
Cranial base is divided into three basins that comprise the cranial floor, what are they?
- Anterior cranial fossa holds the frontal lobe of the brain
- Middle cranial fossa holds the temporal lobes of the brain
- Posterior cranial fossa contains the cerebellum

Name the 8 cranial bones
- 2 temporal
- 1 frontal
- 2 parietal
- 1 occipital
- 1 sphenoid
- 1 ethmoid
What’s up with the Frontal bone?
- Forms forehead and part of the roof of the cranium
- Coronal suture—posterior boundary of frontal bone
- Supraorbital margin—ridge of bone deep to eyebrow
- Contains frontal sinus

Remember something about the Parietal bone…
- Form most of cranial roof and part of its lateral walls
- Bordered by four sutures
- Sagittal: between parietal bones
- Coronal: at anterior margin
- Lambdoid: at posterior margin
- Squamous: at lateral border
- Two temporal lines for attachment of the temporalis muscle

Where the temporal bone?
Lateral wall and part of floor of cranial cavity
What are the 4 parts of the temporal bone?
- squamous
- tympanic
- mastoid
- petrous
Where’s the squamous part(of temporal bone)?
- Encircled by squamous suture
- Zygomatic process
- Mandibular fossa
Where’s the tympanic part(of temporal bone)?
- External auditory meatus
- Styloid process
Where’s the mastoid part(of temporal bone)?
Mastoid process
Where’s the petrous part(of temporal bone)?
Where’s the occipital bone?
- Rear and base of skull
- Foramen magnum opening for spinal cord
- Occipital condyles—knobs resting on spinal column
- Superior and inferior nuchal lines for neck muscle attachment
Where’s the sphenoid bone?
- Body
- Greater wing
- Lesser wing
- Optic canal
- Sella turcica
- Sphenoid sinus
Where’s the ethmoid bone?
- Located between eyes
- Contributes to medial wall of orbit, walls and roof of nasal cavity, and nasal septum
Where’s the perpendicular plate?
Forms superior two-thirds of nasal septum
Where’s the cribriform plate?
Forms roof of nasal cavity
