Chapter 8: Respondent Conditioning Flashcards
Respondent behaviours
drawn out or controlled by stimulus (CS or US)
- automatic, reflexive, involuntary
unconditioned stimulus(US)
stimulus that naturally elicits a reflexive response
- no learning has taken place, reflex response
ex. meat powder
unconditioned response (UR)
reflexive response naturally elicited by an unconditioned stimulus
ex. salivation
neutral stimulus(NS)
stimulus that has no effect on reflexive responses
ex. sound of metronome
conditioned response
Response from conditioned stimulus
ex. salivation
respondent conditioning
entails manipulating stimuli that elicit reflexive response
- NS + US = CS
“conditional”
dependent on learning
“unconditional”
reflexive, not dependent on learning
trace conditioning
NS present before US; they do not overlap in time
Delay conditioning
onset NS occurs before onset of US; overlap in time
simultaneous conditioning
NS and US are presented at the same time
Backward conditioning
US presented before NS
Higher- Order- Conditioning
if an NS is paired with an established CS a number of times, the NS becomes a CS that will then elicit the same CR
operant behaviours
- voluntary by Sd
- consequences after response
respondent extinction
CS is presented without the US
