chapter 8: producing data sampling Flashcards
Undercoverage bias
when segments of the population are unable to participate
population
all the individuals the researchers are interested in
stratified random sample
when a population is split into subgroups from which SRS’s are drawn
SRS
Simple random sample - all samples of the same size have the same chance of being selected
sampling design
describes exactly how to choose a sample from the population
describes exactly how to choose a sample from the population
to say exactly what population we want to describe
nonresponse
to say exactly what population we want to describe
sample
the individuals from whom information was obtained
A characteristic of a simple random sample that sets it apart from other samples is that
every sample of the same size has the same chance to be selected
statistical inference
using a sample to make conclusions about a population
random sample (as opposed to SRS)
each individual has the same chance of being selected
convenience sample
a sample selected by taking the members of the population that are easiest to reach
Voluntary Response Sample
consists of people who choose themselves by responding to a broad appeal. Voluntary response samples are biased because people with strong opinions are most likely to respond.
