What was the Wilmot Proviso?
It was a bill proposed by David Wilmot, suggesting that ‘neither slavery nor involuntary servitude would be permitted in the new territory’
How did the South react to the Wilmot Proviso?
They were outraged, believing any anti-slavery decision would threaten slavery everywhere.

The idea that people living in a territory had the right to decide by voting whether to allow slavery

How did Calhoun respond to Clay’s proposal?
He believed Northern agitation against slavery threatened to destroy the South. He demanded equal rights in the territories, the return of fugitive slaves, and a guarantee of a balance of power between the sections.
What was the Fugitive Slave Act?
The Fugitive Slave Act was when people would capture and return runaway slaves in the North to their owners in the South. Some freed black people were taken back to the South and sold, which made it corrupt and unnecessary.
