Which group in Cali probably had more political power after independence, the mestizos or the rancheros?
Mexican Independence brought very little change in California, but rancheros still stayed highest, since they owned a lot of land. Mestizos stayed below, but they did have interesting skills, like being ‘cowboys’ or craftspeople.
Were Natives better off before or after Mexico made missions?
They were better, since whites/Europeans made up higher classes, and the less white you were the lower you went on the social scale.
What is a mestizo?
A mestizo is a European and Native American mixed child.
What does ‘secularize’ mean?
To transfer the use, possession, or control of something from church to civil authority

Native Americans.
What type of ranching thrived in New Mexico? What were some staple crops?
Sheep ranching. Corn, peppers, and potatoes were staple.
What happened in the 1820s?
The Navajo and the Apache launched many attacks on New Mexico, and the government was unable to provide protection. This gave a growing dissatisfaction with the national government.
What did the Pueblo people do in 1837?
They and northern Hispanic settlers launched a rebellion, killed the unpopular governer, and murdered 16 other government officials
