What is a squatter?
A squatter is someone who settles on public land under government regulation with the hope of acquiring title to the land
What are two innovations that were made as they were settling?
Plows and Reapers. Plows were given into steel and iron blades, and Cyrus McCormick made a mechanical reaper.
What were overlanders?
People who traveled overland to the West.
What did Natives give overlanders?
Food and Helpful information, along with edible plants and sources of water. They also traded with the settlers
What happened when overland traffic increased?
Natives became anxious about the amount of food and land they had left. Many groups relied on buffalo, which were being taken away by overlanders.
What did the federal government negotiate?
A treaty. Eight Native groups were promised specific territories that were only theirs, and would belong to them if they let settlers pass peacefully.
What happened to Joseph Smith?
He was murdered by a mob in 1844. Brigham Young took his people west to escape further persecution.
What was the Mormon Trail?
The Mormon Trail was the way that the Mormons used to get to Salt Lake City. It served as a valuable route in the west.
What is ‘Deseret’?
‘The Mormon capital.’, or Salt Lake City. They stopped there when they were on their ‘pilgrimage’ and were enchanted by the area, so they set up a church.
