Chapter 8 key terms Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
between metal and non metal
involve electron transfer
very exothermic
one element gives up an electron and the other gains an electron
3 properties of ionic substances
-brittle
-high melting points
-crystalline
What group of periodic table doesn’t follow octet rule?
transition metals
What is covalent bonding?
atoms share electrons
primarily non metals
What is electronegativity?
The ability of an atom in a molecule to attract electrons to itself
What is formal charge?
the charge of an atom would have if all of the electrons in a covalent bond were shared equally
What are localized electrons?
electrons specifically on one atom or shared between two atoms
What are delocalized electrons?
electrons shared by multiple atoms
What 3 types of ions or molecules that do not follow the octet rule?
1) ions or molecules with an odd number of electrons
2) ions or molecules with less than an octet
3) ions or molecules with more than eight valence electrons(an expanded octet)
What is hypervalence and which elements are hypervalent?
it is when an element is in periods 3 through 6, it can use d-orbitals to make more than four bonds
Relationship between number of bonds and bond length
multiple bonds are stronger than single bonds
as the number of bonds between 2 atoms increases, the bond length decreases
