Chapter 3 key terms Flashcards
What are 3 types of chemical reactions?
Combustion reactions, decomposition reactions, Combination reactions
What is a combination reaction?
when 2 or more substances react to form one product
What is a decomposition reaction?
where one substance breaks down into 2 or more substances
What is the product of a decomposition reaction of a metal carbonate?
carbon dioxide and a metal oxide
What is a combustion reaction?
rapid reactions that produce a flame and most often involve oxygen in the air as a reactant
What are the products of a combustion reaction when burning hydrocarbons?
carbon dioxide and water
What is formula weight?
The sum of atomic weights for the atoms in a chemical formula
What is molecular weight?
the sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in a molecule
-if the substance is a molecule, the formula weight is also called its molecular weight
