Interrogative Particle
The interrogative particle (הֲ) is prefixed to the first word of a sentence to turn a statement into a question.
The form הֲ is used before most consonants.
הֲכִסְאִים הָאֵלֶּה? - Hakise’im Ha’eleh? - Are these the chairs?
הֲמַלְכִים בַּבַּיִת? - Hamalchim Babayit? - Are the kings in the house?
The form הַ is used before gutturals or any consonant with Shewa.
הַחֲצוֹת הִיא? - Hachatzot Hi? - Is it midnight?
הַעַם הַזֶּה? - Ha’am Hazeh? - Is this the people?
The form הֶ is used before gutturals with Qamets.
הֶחָכָם הַזֶּה? - Hechacham Hazeh? - Is he the wise one?
הֶהָרִים הָאֵלֶּה? - Heharim Ha’eleh? - Are these the mountains?
זֹאת הָעִיר - Zot Ha’ir - This is the city.

שָׁלַח הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת־הַנָּבִיא - Shalach HaMelech Et HaNavi - The king sent the prophet.
הֲשָׁלַח הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת־הַנָּבִיא - Hashalach HaMelech Et HaNavi - Did the king send the prophet?
זֶה הַבַּיִת - Zeh HaBayit - This is the house.
הֲזֶה הַבַּיִת - Hazeh HaBayit - Is this the house?
בָּנָה הָאִישׁ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּחַ - Banah Ha’ish Et HaMizbeach - The man built the altar.
הֲבָנָה הָאִישׁ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּחַ - Habanah Ha’ish Et HaMizbeach - Did the man build the altar?
יָצָא הַנַּעַר לַשָּׂדֶה - Yatza HaNa’ar LaSadeh - The boy went out to the field.
הֲיָצָא הַנַּעַר לַשָּׂדֶה - Hayatza HaNa’ar LaSadeh - Did the boy go out to the field?
הָלַךְ הַנָּבִיא לָעִיר - Halach HaNavi La’ir - The prophet went to the city.
הֲלַךְ הַנָּבִיא לָעִיר - Halach HaNavi La’ir - Did the prophet go to the city?
כָּתַב הַסּוֹפֵר אֶת־הַסֵּפֶר - Katav HaSofer Et HaSefer - The scribe wrote the book.

The Hateph Pathach (הֲ) of the interrogative particle is not the spelling of the definite article (הַ).

The interrogative particle is normally prefixed to verbs, the negative particle, or prepositions. The definite article will not appear with these parts of speech.
