Chapter 5 - Definite Article Previxed to Begadkephat Consonants Flashcards

1
Q

In Hebrew, words that begin with a Begadkephat consonant (ב, ג, ד, כ, פ, ת) will appear with a Dagesh Lene (a dot) in the letter when the noun is indefinite. When the definite article הַ (ha) is added to these words, the Dagesh Lene becomes a Dagesh Forte, although there is no change in spelling.

A

The indefinite noun בַּיִת (bayit) means “a house.”
With the definite article, it becomes הַבַּיִת (ha-bayit), meaning “the house.”
