Chapter 6: Spelling of inseparable prepositions Flashcards
Before most consonants, the inseparable prepositions are spelled with Vocal Shewa.
בְּשָׂדֶה (in a field)
כְּמֶלֶךְ (like a king)
לְנַעַר (for a young man)
Before a Hateph vowel, the inseparable prepositions are spelled with the corresponding short vowel of the Hateph vowel (Rule of Shewa 2).
בֱּאֱמֶת (in truth)
כֲּאֲנָשִׁים (like men)
לֳחֳלִי (for sickness)
This is showing the hateph on the first consonant it shouldn’t
Before consonants with Vocal Shewa, the inseparable prepositions are spelled with Hireq (Rule of Shewa 1).
בִּזְרוֹעַ (with an arm)
כִּשְׁאוֹל (like Sheol)
לִבְרִית (for a covenant)
In nouns with the definite article, the preposition displaces the ה of the article, but the vowel of the article is retained.
בַּמִּדְבָּר (in the wilderness)
כַּמֶּלֶךְ (like the king)
לָאִשָּׁה (for the woman)
