mental wellbeing
involves our state of mind, our enjoyment of life, and ability to cope with the normal stresses of everyday life and develop to our potential
mentally healthy
- when we are in a positive state of mental health
- we feel good about ourselves and are functioning well
- we are also more likely to enjoy our relationships, fulfil goals and contribute to society
- we can usually cope with lifes challenges ‘bounce back’
ways of considering mental wellbeing
- resilience to cope with and manage change
- SEWB for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
levels of functioning
- refers to how well an individual independently performs or functions in their environment
- can be represented on a continuum
- how well an individual meets challenges
adaptive and maladaptive behaviour
ADAPTIVE - enable the individual to adjust to the environment appropriately
MALADAPTIVE - any behaviour that is detrimental and interferes with the individual
(mental illness/disorders impair functioning e.g depression)
resilience
- ability to successfully cope and manage change and uncertainty
- bouncing back from difficult experiences
- mentally healthy tends to be resilient and perceive the stressor as a opportunity
defining SEWB
- multidimensional and holistic framework for wellbeing
- captures all elements of being (body, mind, emotions, family, kinship, community, culture)

- mental wellbeing is only one element of being
- is an example of self determination
SEWB components
- self (the individual)
- 7 elements of being (interconnected w step 3)
- contextual determinants of the quality of connections
- the experiences and changing expression (quality and strength of connections)

what is mental health
a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises their own abilities, can cope with normal stresses
severities of mental health
MENTALLY HEALTHY - positive state of wellbeing, able to cope with challenges and functions effectively
MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM - wellbeing not positive, possibly moody, may not functions as well as should, could lead to further issues
MENTAL DISORDER - diagnosed changes to mental wellbeing, behaviour is dysfunctional and distressing (atypical) and usually long term
internal and external factors
INTERNAL - which originate from inside a person such as their physical stress response
EXTERNAL - which originate from outside a person such as our relationship
e.g bio (genes) psycho (thoughts) social (relationships)
