process by which axons become coated w/ myelin, a fatty substance that speeds the transmission of nerve impulses from neuron to neuron

literally, sidedness, referring to the specialization in the certain functions by each side of the brain, w/ one side dormant for each activity. the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, & vice versa
lateralization
ability to postpone or deny the immediate response to an idea or behavior
impulse control
tendency to persevere in, or stick to, one thought or action for a long time
preservation
practices that are aimed at anticipating, controlling & preventing dangerous activities; these practices reflect the birds that accidents are not random & that injuries can be made less harmful if proper controls are in place
injury control/harm reduction

harm or endangerment that has been reported, investigated, & verified

an effort by child-welfare authorities to find a long-term living situation that will provide stability & support for a maltreated child
permanency planning
a legal, publicly supported system in which a maltreated child is removed from the parents’ custody & entrusted to another adult or family, which is reimbursed for expenses incurred in meeting the child’s needs
foster care
form of foster care in which a relative of a relative of a maltreated child, usually a grandparent, becomes the approved caregiver
kinship care
legal proceeding in which an adult or couple is granted the joys & obligations of being that child’s parent(s)
adoption
