What is latitude?
east-west line that are north or south of the equator.
What is the equator?
an imaginary line around Earth’s middle; lies between the north and south poles.
At what degrees is the equator marked at?
0 degrees.
What is a map?
a representational drawing of a
location.
What is a globe?
a map of Earth that models its shape, and the locations and relative sizes of oceans and continents. Look on page 186 for a diagram of thr globe and labels.
What is longitude?
north-south lines thag are east or west of the prime meridian.
What is prime meridian?
An imaginary line through Greenwich, England and perpendicular to thr equator; 0 degrees longitude.
What is the international date line?
an imaginary longitude line located at 180 degree from the prime meridian.
What is the difference between a map and globe?
A map is flat and a globe is 3-D
What is a legend?
a special area on a map that lists and explains the symbols that are used.
What is a scale?
scale of a map helps you relate the distances on the map to the larger, real-life distances.
What are the three map scales?
Fractional, verbal, and bar scales.
What is a fractional scale?
shows the ratio of the map distance to the real-life distance as a fraction.
What is a verbal scale?
expresses the relationship in words, for example, “ 1 centimeter is equal to 1 kilometer.”
What is a bar scale?
simply a bar drawn on the map with the size of the bar proportional to a distance in real life.
