Chapter 8 2/4 Flashcards
method of loci
involves forming images that link items to places
schema
organized pattern of thought about some aspect of the world; class or ppl, events, situations (prefrontal cortex) “mental framework”
associative network
massive network of associated ideas and concepts
priming
the activation of one concept by another
neural network
particular pattern or set of nodes that become activated simultaneously
declarative memory
factual knowledge 2 subunits
episodic memory
is our store of factual info concerning personal experiences: when, where, what happened in the episodes of our lives
semantic memory
general factual knowledge about the world and language, including memories for words and concepts
procedural memory
(non-declarative) reflected in skills + actions ex. typing, musical instrument
explicit memory
conscious recollection, intentional memory retrieval
implicit memory
occurs when memory influences our behaviour w/o cs awareness
priming tasks
activating the info that is still in our memory from an earlier time
retrieval cues
any internal/external stimulus that stimulates the activation stored in long-term memory
flashbulb memories
recollections that seem so vivid that we can picture them as if they were a snapshot of a moment in time
encoding specificity principle
memory is enhanced when conditions present during retrieval match those that were present during encoding, ex. woman not remembering her assault until she went jogging in the same place again (all conditions same)
