Chapter 8 Flashcards
Bacteriophage
Bacteria specific virus
Virus
Intercellular, metabolism and reproduction only occurs within a host cell, each virus has specific host, they are ubiquitous
Lytic cycle
Steps: attachment, injection of genetic material, replication of genetic material, assembly of viral proteins, lysis. Ex: flu, Ebola
Lysogenic cycle
Steps: attachment, injection of genetic material, INTEGRATION OF GENETIC MATERIAL, replication of genetic material, assembly of viral protein, lysis. Ex: herpes, HIV
Plaques
When phage infects and lysis cells the holes on the lawn are known as plaques
Lawn
Host organism forms a lawn
Too numerous to count
TNTC where plaques are over 300
Too few to count
When plaques are lower than 30
PFU
Plaque forming unit
