Chapter 9 Flashcards
Antibiotics
Low molecular weight compounds made by microbes or chemically synthesized, which inhibit or kill other microorganisms
Sterilants
Kills all microorganisms
Sanitizers
Agents are used to lower the levels of bacterial cells
Bacteriostatic
An agent that only inhibits the growth of bacterial cells
Bactericidal
An agent that kills bacterial cells
Zone of inhibition
Area around a disk where no growth has occurred due to the agent in the disk
Antibiotic classes
CELL WALL SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS ( penicillin derivatives) PROTEIN SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS (tetracyclines) RNA SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS, DNA SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS (cipro)
Spectrum of antibiotic activity
Describes the range of types of microorganisms it can kill or inhibit
Antibiotic spectrums
BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS (tetracyclines), EXTENDED SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS (amoxicillin) NARROW SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS (polymyxins)
Disinfectants
Substances that are applied to non living objects to destroy microorganisms that are living on the objects
Antiseptics
Antimicrobial substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the possibility of infection
Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)
The lowest concentration needed to inhibit the growth of a bacteria or microbe
Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC)
The minimum concentration that results in bacterial death
