Chapter 7 - Visual Flight Rules Flashcards
Visual Flight Rules
What are the intentions behind establishing Visual Flight Rules?
To prevent Basic PPL holders from entering cloud or areas of reduced visibility
What is considered the starting point with regard to VFR minima?
Visibility of 8km
Distance from cloud of 1,500 metres horizontally and 1,000 feet vertically
What are conditions called when it is possible to fly under VFR?
VMC
Under what conditions must all aircraft fly with a visibility of 8km?
At or above 10,000 feet
What are the required VFR conditions for flight between 3,000 feet and 10,000 feet? To whom does this apply?
1,000 feet vertical distance from cloud
5km visibility
1,500m horizontally from cloud
Applies to aircraft in all airspace
How is airspace separated at and below 3,000ft?
Into controlled and uncontrolled airspace (ABCDE and FG)
What are the minima for FG airspace under 3,000ft?
Clear of cloud and within sight of the surface
5km visibility
What are the minima for ABCDE airspace under 3,000ft?
1,000 feet vertically from cloud
5km visibility
1,500m horizontally from cloud
How may slower flights be excepted under VMC?
When under 3,000ft and travelling at less than 140kts, minimum visibility may be reduced to 1,500 metres
