Why did the Renaissance begin in Italy? (4)
- Roman buildings reminded its citizens of their former glory.
- In 1453, the Turks captured the city of Constantinople from the Greeks. Greek scholars fled Greece bring manuscripts with them.
- Italy was made up of many wealthy independent city states e.g. Venice, Florence and Milan. Wealthy patrons paid artists and architects for their work.
- Italy was the crossroads of the world. It was open to new ideas from other countries.
When did Northern Italian artists and scholars become interested in the art, architecture and writings of Ancient Rome and Greece?
In about 1350.
How did Brunelleschi build the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Florence?
He used a corbelling technique, placing each stone slightly sticking out from the one below.
Name 3 developments in art.
- Before Renaissance, paintings were not realistic. Important people were painted larger and less important people smaller.
- Medieval paintings had a lack of feeling and the backgrounds appeared flat.
- Renaissance paintings look more real and concentrate on people’s feelings, bodies were more lifelike (due to anatomy) and they used perspective.
Explain how they used egg yolk before the Renaissance.
Before the Renaissance they mixed paint with egg yolk to make it bind but this caused it to dry quickly, giving artists less time to perfect their work.
Explain how they used linseed oil.
In the 5th century they began to use linseed oil instead of egg yolk, giving them more time to perfect their work and fix mistakes.
Explain how they used perspective.
It was a new technique to avoid the flat look in the medieval paintings. The further away the object, the smaller it was giving the illusion of space and distance.
Explain how they used sfumato.
A new technique meaning ‘smokey’ that made faces in paintings like more lifelike by adding shading to their skin.
Explain frescos
Paintings that decorate walls and ceilings. Artists painted onto wet plaster so the colours are absorbed into the wall.
What was the Arnolfini Marrige?
A painting by Jan Van Eyck a Northern European Renaissance artist.
Who was Andrea Palladio?
A Renaissance Architect who designed buildings with large pillars, rounded arches, domed roofs and large front porches (classical architecture). (Italian)
Who was Filippo Brunelleschi?
A famous Renaissance architect who designed the roof of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Florence, using the corbeled roof technique. (Italian)
Who was Leonardo da Vinci?
He was an artist, inventor, architect, musician, botanist, mathematician, and sportsman. He is very famous and painted the Mona Lisa. (Italian)
Who was Andrea del Verocchio?
A well known artist in Florence who taught da Vinci and convinced him to study anatomy for his paintings and sculptures.
Who was Lorenzo de Medici?
The most powerful and famous patron. He was from Florence and sponsored artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo.
