Chapter 7 Terms Flashcards
Craters
Are formed by impact of solid bodies, such as asteroids
Differential Gravitational Force
The difference between the gravitational force exerted on an object at two different points
Hightlands
The old, heavily cratered regions on the moon
Maria
Vast, smooth, dark, and congealed lava on the moon and some planets
Rays
Long, narrow, light - colored markings on the moon that radiates from young craters
Regolith
The surface rubble of broken rock on the moon or other solid body
Rilles
Narrow canyons on the Moon or other body
Synchronous Rotation
The condition that a body’s rotation period is the same as its orbital period
Tidal Braking
The slowing of one body’s rotation as a result of gravity
Tidal Bulge
A bulge on a body created by the gravitional attraction on it by another
Tides
The rise and fall of the Earth’s oceans created by gravitational attraction
