Chapter 5 Terms Flashcards
Adaptive Optics
Used to compensaye for atmospheric distortions, which gives us a sharper image
CCD
Electronic devide that records the intensity of light falling on it
Diffraction
Bending of light, which makes it difficult to distinguish fine details in images
Dispersion
The spreading of light or other electromagnetic radiation into a spectrum
Interferometer
Device consisting of two or more telescopes connected together to work as a single instruments and are used to obtain a high resolving power
Light-Gathering Power
Ability of a telescope to collect light
Reflector
A telescope that uses a mirror to collect and focus light
Refraction
The bending of light when it passes through one substance and enters another
Refractor
A telescope that uses a lens to collect and focus light
Resolving Power
The ability of a telescope to discern fine detail and the larger the diameter, the greater resolving power
Scintillation
Twinkling of stars caused by the atmosphere
Seeing
Measure of the steadiness of the atmosphere during astronomical observation
