Chapter 7: Schedules and theories of reinforcement Flashcards
Schedule of reinforcement
the response requirement that must be met to obtain reinforcement - what exactly has to be done for that reinforcement to be delivered
Continuous reinforcement schedules
a schedule in which each specified response is reinforced (CRF)
*rat gets food EVERY time he presses the lever
Intermittent (partial) reinforcement schedule
schedule where only some responses are reinforced
Fixed ration FR schedule
reinforcement is contingent upon a FIXED predictable number of responses
*FR5 - rat presses lever 5 times he gets a treat
Post reinforcement pause (PRP)
short pause following the attainment of each reinforcer
rich/dense vs lean
lower FR schedule rich
higher lean
ratio strain
a disruption in responding due due to an overly demanding response requirement
Variable ratio VR schedule
reinforcement is contingent upon a varying unpredictable number of responses
*VR5 rat has to emit an AVERAGE of 5 lever presses for food
*little to no PRP
*generally produce high steady ROR
Fixed Interval schedule FI
reinforcement is contingent upon the first response after a certain fixed, predictable amount of time
** scalloped diagram
*PRP
Variable interval VI schedule
reinforcement is contingent upon the first response after a varying, unpredictable period of time
*VI 30” rats will get treat AVERAGE of every 30 seconds
* usually moderate steady ROR
* little to no PRP
