Describe the growth in middle to late childhood
slow and consistent, growing an average of 2-3 inches and 5-7 lbs per year. Their proportions also even out (head decreases in relation to height)
Describe the development of the brain in middle to late childhood
brain volume stabilizes, prefrontal cortex continues to develop
What is the second leading cause of death in 5-14 year olds?
cancer, most commonly leukemia
Describe Piaget’s concrete operational stage
ages 7-11, can perform concrete operations and reason logically as long as reasoning can be applied to concrete examples
What is seriation?
the concrete operation that involves the ability to order things along a quantitative dimension (like ordering sticks from long to short) occurs during concrete operational stage
What is transitivity?
the ability to logically combine relations to understand certain conclusions (ex. sticks A, B, and C are different lengths. We can conclude that C is longer than A because C is longer than B and A is shorter than B)

- self-control/inhibition
- working memory
- flexibility (must be flexible in their thinking)
