Describe the Montessori approach to early childhood/preschool education
Child is given the freedom to choose and switch between activities, however this doesn’t encourage quieter kids to participate in groups leading to a neglect in a childs socioemotional development
Describe the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education
Child-directed, children encouraged to make their own choices in activities. However, those activities put an emphasis on community and exploring these activities in groups
the classroom is like a “third teacher”, with natural lighting and decor. The walls display childrens current and completed projects to show development and growth as a motivator
Describe the Head Start approach to early childhood education
education for kids from low SES backgrounds to put them on a more level playing field when they enter first grade
What are 2 controversies in early childhood education
1) what the curriculum should be (child-centered vs academic)
2) whether it should be universal or not

Vygotsky- emphasis on language and socializing, education helps children learn the tools of a culture
Piaget- cognition drives language, education merely refines a chikd’s cognitive skills that have already emerged
