alcohol abuse
characterized by one or more of the following as a result of alcohol use: (1) failure to fulfill major role obligations; (2) recurrent physically hazardous use; (3) recurrent alcohol-related legal problems; or (4) continued use despite persistent alcohol-related social or interpersonal problems
binge drinkers
men who have consumed five or more and women who have consumed four or more drinks in a row at least once during the previous two weeks.

French paradox
the fact that most people in France have a diet that is high in fat but still have lower rates of heart disease
physical activity
any bodily movement produced by contraction of the skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure
secondhand smoke/ environmental tobacco smoke
tobacco smoke inhaled by nonsmokers who are in the presence of smokers
sensory specific satiety
when only one type of food is available at a mean people eat a moderate amount of it. If a second food is then introduced, the amount of the new food eaten will be more than if it was presented by itself
standard drink
12-oz serving of beer (a standard bottle or can), a 5-oz glass of wine, or a 1.5-oz shot of gin, vodka, rum or scotch, is a standard serving.
gut brain axis
the relationship between the brain and the gut influence weight gain, bowel movement, nutrient delivery and microbial balance. From the gut to the brain, nutrients influence the creation of neurotransmitters, stress/ anxiety, mood and behavior
anorexia
eating disorder characterized by intense fear of weight gain, restrictive eating and body dysmorphia (individuals see themselves as heavier than they actually are)
bulimia
eating disorder characterized by habitually overeating (soft foods that are easily ingested) followed by purging; excessive exercise and vomiting are both considered forms of purging
binge eating disorder
eating disorder characterized by the consumption of a large amount of food without conscious awareness but is NOT followed by purging.
