Chapter 6: Increasing Healthy Behaviors Flashcards
action
stage of the Transtheoretical Model where subjects are actually changing their behavior. The change has to have taken place over the last six months and should involve active efforts to change behavior
contemplation
stage in the Transtheoretical Model where people recognize they may be doing something unhealthy and then intend to change (within the next month)
Health Belief Model (HBM)
a theoretical approach to studying the motivations behind our health behaviors. It highlights that our beliefs relating to the effectiveness, ease, and consequences of doing a certain behavior will determine whether we do that behavior.
health education
term for the collection of efforts to teach people to limit their behaviors detrimental to their health and increase behaviors that are conducive to health. Health educators pay attention to a range of factors including the individual, interpersonal relationships, institutions, community, and public policy
healthy behaviors
any specific behaviors that maintain and enhance health
intention
a person’s subjective probability that he or she will perform the behavior in question
interventions
specific programs designed to assess levels of behaviors, introduce ways to change them, measures whether change has occurred, and assess the impact of the change
maintenance
stage in the Transtheoretical Model where people try to not fall back into performing their unhealthy behaviors or relapsing. They may still be changing their behaviors and performing new behaviors, but they are not doing them as often as someone in the action stage
normative beliefs
what a person thinks others think about the behavior in question
precontemplation
stage in Transtheoretical Model when people are not aware that they are practicing a behavior that is unhealthy or do not intend to take any action to change a behavior (especially not in the next six months).
preparation
stage in the Transtheoretical Model where people are ready to take action to change the behavior. They generate a plan and have specific ideas of how to change
self-efficacy
conviction that one can successfully execute the behavior required to produce the outcome
termination
stage in the Transtheoretical Model where they are no longer tempted by the unhealthy behavior they have changed
Transtheoretical Model (TTM)
major theory of health behavior change that identifies common themes across different intervention theories and notes that we process through different stages as we think about, attempt to, and finally change any specific behavior
Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)
major theory of health behavior change that focuses on the intention of behavior change
