Chapter 7 intercom Flashcards
listening
interpersonally, the process of making sense of others’ spoken messages; different than hearing; when the brain reconstructs these electrochemical impulses into a representation of the original sound and then gives them meaning. ** ON TEST*
hearing
the process in which sound waves strike the eardrum and cause vibrations that are transmitted to the brain; the physiological dimension of listening
dual-purpose theory
when we move beyond hearing and start to listen, we process info in two very different ways - thru mindless listening and mindful listening
mindless listening
occurs when we react to others’ messages automatically and routinely, without much mental investment; superficial; cursory…. NOT ponder or contemplate
mindful listening
involves giving careful and thoughtful attention and responses to the messages we receive; we tend to do this when the message is important to us, or when someone we care about is speaking about something that is important to him/her
elements in the listening process
Hearing; Attending; Understanding; Responding; Remembering**** HAURR
attending
a form of attention; a psychological process, is part of the process of selection; we don’t do this to every sound that we hear…. choose which sounds to do this to, depending on our situation, desires, etc.
understanding
this occurs when we make sense of a message; it is possible to attend to a message without doing this; also possible to mis___ a message
listening fidelity
the degree of congruence between what a listener understands and what the message sender was attempting to communicate
responding
this consists of giving observable feedback to he speaker; listeners don’t always do this visibly to a speaker, but we should do so more often
remembering
the ability to recall information; most people remember only 50% of what they hear, and as time passes, that percentage drops.
