What are social forces?
the ways ppl alter the attitudes or behaviors of others
What is Conformity?
a change in behavior as a result of the real or imagined influence of other ppl
What is Informational Social Influence?
conforming bc we believe that others’ interpretation of a situation is more correct than others –> helps us choose the right course of action
When are we more likely to conform to Information Social Influence?
- when the situation is ambiguous
- when we are in a crisis
- other ppl are experts
What is the difference btwn Private Acceptance & Public Compliance?
PA - conforming to other ppls behavior bc we believe they’re right
PC - conforming to other ppls behavior w/o believing they are right
What is Normative Social Influence?
conforming in order to be liked & accepted by other ppl
What are Social Norms?
the implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, & beliefs of its members
What was the purpose of the Classic Asch Line Judgement Study?
demonstrates public compliance
What is Social Impact Theory?
conforming to other ppl depends on the strength of group, its immediacy, & the # of other ppl in the group
What factors influence Conformity?
- whether the group is unanimous or not
- having an ally
- perceived relative competence of members
- your position in the group
- gender & cultural differences
How can you overcome Normative Social Influence?
- awareness
- finding an ally
- building idiosyncrasy credits
What is Compliance?
a change in behavior in response to a direct request from another person
What does Door-in-the-face mean?
making a outrageous request (that will most likely be denied) & then follow it w/ a smaller, more reasonable request
What does Foot-in-the-door mean?
getting a person to agree to a large request by getting them to agree to a smaller request
What is Lowballing?
making a reasonable request first then once it’s accepted, you change the cost of the transaction
