What is Prosocial Behavior?
any act performed w/ the goal of benefitting another person
What is Altruism?
the desire to help others, even if it costs the helper
What is Kin Selection?
the idea that the behavior that helps a genetic relative is favoured by natural selection
What is the Norm of Reciprocity?
the expectation that helping others will increase the likelihood that they will help us in the future
What is Social Exchange Theory?
states that much of what we do stems from the desire to maximize our outcomes & minimize our costs
What are the three factors of Social Exchange Theory?
- reciprocity
- relieve personal distribution
- gain us social approvement; increased self-worth
What is the Empathy-Altruism Hypothesis?
the idea that when we feel empathy for a person, we will attempt to help them purely for altruistic reasons regardless of gain
What is the Bystander Effect?
the greater number of ppl who witness an emergency, the less likely anyone will help
What 4 factors influence prosocial behavior?
- gender
- socioeconomic status
- culture
- religion
What are the benefits of helping in a good mood?
- we interpret events in a more positive way
- helping another prolongs our good mood
- good moods increase self-attention
What is the Negative-State Relief Hypothesis?
the idea that ppl help in order to alleviate their own sadness & distress
What are the 5 steps in the Latane & Darley Model?
- noticing smth is wrong
- interpret the even as an emergency – pluralistic ignorance
- assume responsibility (diffusion of responsibility)
- know how to help
- decide to implement help
