What is Self-Concept?
the relatively stable perceptions each person has of themselves
What is Self-Esteem?
the part of our self-concept that involves evaluations of self-worth
What is Self-concept Clarity?
the extent to which knowledge about the self is stable & clearly & consistently defined
What is the Sociometer Theory?
states that self-esteem is a gauge that monitors the extent to which we are accepted or rejected by others
What is Self-Enhancement?
an unrealistically positive view of oneself
What is the Self-verification Theory?
ppl have a need to seek confirmation of their self-concept, whether the self is positive or negative
What is Self-Awareness Theory?
the idea when ppl focus their attention on themselves & they evaluate their behavior w/ their internal standards
What is Self-Perception Theory?
when our attitudes & feelings are uncertain or ambiguous, we infer these states by observing our behavior & the situation in which it occurred
What are the two types of motivation?
- intrinsic motivation
- extrinsic motivation
What is Intrinsic Motivation?
the desire to engage in an activity bc we enjoy it/find it interesting
What is Extrinsic Motivation?
the desire to engage in activity because of external rewards or pressures, not bc we enjoy it
What are Causal Theories?
theories about the causes of one’s own feelings & behaviors; typically learned from culture
What is the Overjustification Effect?
we view our behavior as caused by extrinsic reasons, making us underestimate the extent to which our behavior was caused by intrinsic reasons
What is the Looking-Glass Self?
when we see ourselves thru the eyes of other ppl & incorporate their views into our self-concept
How does self-knowledge develop?
- introspection
- observing our own behavior
- social interactions
- comparing ourselves w/ others
