Chapter 7 - Concrete form design Flashcards
What is formwork?
Temporary or permanent moulds into which concrete is poured
What is falsework?
Any additional temporary bracing that serves to support the formwork & permanent structure until it is able to support its own weight.
What is the cost of formwork in concrete construction? (%)
It’s between 40%-60% of the cost
Which materials are used for prefabricated modular forms
Steel or aluminum
Why Plywood is extensively used for site-constructed forms?
- Economical
- Available in large panels & variety of thickness
- Predictable strength
Explain the difference between conventional and industrialized formwork
Conventional: assembled in site from standard new elements for each use and disassembled after each use
IIdustrialized: mostly factory-fabricated products & used many times as one unit without being disassembled after each use
What do design principles involve? What are the two main steps?
The design of formwork will usually involve the design of the wall, column, or slab forms constructed of wood or plywood
Two main steps:
1. Calculate the Design Load (Live & Dead Loads)
2. Analyze primary form components
