Social-Polite Touch
A category of touch used in daily interactions, such as greetings and farewells.
Repetition
gestures w/ verbal messages
(Ex: If someone asks you for directions to the nearest drugstore, you could say “north of here about two blocks” and then point north with your index finger.)
Substitution
non verbal signals over words
(Ex: “When a friend asks you what’s new, you might shrug your shoulders instead of answering in words”)
Complementing
verbal words with corresponding nonverbal cues
(Ex: “a friend who apologizes for forgetting an appointment with you. You will be most likely to believe your friend if they use a sincere-sounding tone of voice and show an apologetic facial expression.”)
Accenting
emphasizing part of a message
(Ex: Italics to emphasize an idea in print)
Regulating
managing and controlling responses w/ non-verbal cues
(Ex: long pauses are often taken as opportunities for others to speak
Ex: such as an extended okaaaay or a glance at your phone means that you would like to wrap up the conversation.
Ex: they may hold up a finger to suggest that the listener wait to speak)
Contradicting
saying the opposite/denying something but a nonverbal cue says otherwise
(Ex: Someone with a red face and bulging veins yells, “I’m not angry!)
