Why is listening important?1
Listening is important because we spend so much time doing it, good listening skills help to improve your memory, helps enhance academic performance, it is a highly desirable skill in the work place, and it can improve our overall health.
Define Hearing
Hearing is the action of picking up sounds, voices and more.
Define Understanding
Understanding is the process of categorizing messages and understanding.
Define Evaluating
Evaluating is the process of categorizing messages and understanding.
Define Responding
Responding is the act of sending a message to the initial sender.
What is a Listening Style?
Listening style is the set of “attitudes, beliefs, and predispositions about the how, where, when, and what of the information reception and encoding process.
What is Informational Listening?
Informational listening involves an action oriented listening style which focuses on the words in a message. TIps on how to improve? Pay full attention, don’t judge the speaker right away. When taking notes paraphrase, clarify, review and summarize.
What is Critical Listening?
Critical listening involves the content oriented listening style. The interests are detailed and complex. Tips on how to improve? Consider the speakers credibility, watch body language, evaluate messages, weigh the evidence, and summarize.
Define Analogy
An analogy is a comparison of two things. “As light as a feather.” “Hotter than the sun.”
Define Example
An example is something you use to illustrate a point. 2*2=4 is an example of multiplication.
Define Statistics
Statistics are anything that has numerical data.
Define Testimony
A testimony is an assertion made by someone who has knowledge or experience in a particular field.
Define Supportive Listening
Supportive listening uses people oriented listening styles and focuses on emotion, your goal is to put the other person at ease, remove all distractions, emphasize with the other person, be patient and aware of your own emotions.
