Chapter 7 - Aiframe Maintenance Flashcards
What is the examination procedure?
Look (obvious signs of defects, faults or breaks) Clean (remove dirt) Look Feel (to find wear or play in an item) Listen (for unusual sounds) Smell
What are the maintenance requirements for the fuselage?
Damage Corrosion Rivets Lubrication Cracks Drains blocked Washing Wear Transparencies Surface finish
What does lubrication prevent?
Deterioration, corrosion and wear.
When should an aircraft be washed?
Periodically dependent on the operational environment.
What are you looking for when it comes to transparencies?
Crazing
Impact
With surface finish, what must you check for?
Deterioration
Mandatory markings
What are the maintenance terms for MAP-01?
Check Disconnect Exam Fit Inspect Look Remove Replace Replenish Test Zonal survey
What are the terms for SA2?
Make sure Operate Reconnect Refit Examine as far as possible
What are the 5 things personnel must ensure in the hangar when working on aircraft?
That they are free from potential loose articles
Work areas are kept free from loose articles
Only items necessary to undertake the task are to be taken out
Only the right amount of nuts, bolts are to be taken out for the task and must be accounted for
On completion of task a loose circuit check will be carried out in the work area making sure if any are found they are to be removed
What’s the maintenance for the undercarriage skid type?
Attachment Damage Wear Dents Scores Corrosion Bowing
What is the maintenance for the undercarriage wheeled type?
Damper charging
Brakes (wear, corrosion, leaks and overheating)
Wheels (corrosion)
Tyres (creep, uneven wear, cuts and splits, contamination, opening of thread joint, bulges or ageing)
What must you remember when working with tools?
That the correct tool control procedures must be maintained at all times when undertaking maintenance of an aircraft and associated equipment.
Where is impact damage normally affected?
All areas are subject to this form of maintenance
In what areas is corrosion usually expected?
Battery area, inside of panels, steel components, aluminium alloy components and undercarriage assembly.
What are lubrications used for?
Used to help reduce wear and extending the life of the components and the airframe.
When should doors and fairings be lubricated normally?
Hinged fairings and doors should be lubricated at regular intervals especially following an aircraft wash
What do rivets do?
Rivets fasten the airframe structure together, and in some cases hold on major components.
What should rivets be examined for?
To ensure their presence and that they form an adequate joint.
Where are crack usually found?
Often in inaccessible areas and therefore difficult to find.
How must cracks be tested?
All cracks must be crack tested, by using nondestructive testing techniques to determine their extremities.
With regards to drains, what must be kept clear and why?
Drain holes must be kept clear, from blockage to prevent the trapping of moisture within the airframe structure.
With regards to wear its is essential that the maintainer does what?
Recognises when detected wear is beyond the limit, or the rate of wear is sufficient enough to warrant further investigation.
What must be used when cleaning transparencies?
Use only approved cleaning methods, abrasives must not be used.
What is an aircraft washed for?
To remove dirt and grime allowing potential faults to be seen.
How can you prevent deterioration on the surface finish?
By restoring it when required.
What does it mean by check?
Compare the item with the specified standard.
What does it mean by disconnect?
Uncouple or detach cables, pipelines, or controls from an item.
What does it mean by examine?
Undertake a comprehensive scrutiny, supplemented by measurement and physical testing as necessary to determine the condition of an item
What does it mean by fit?
Correctly attach an item in or to another.
What does it mean by look for damage?
Undertake a visual check for general signs of damage.
What does it mean by make sure?
Make certain that the specified conditions are correct.
What does it mean by operate?
Check, as far as can be determined without the use of test equipment or reference to measurements, that the item or system Is serviceable and functions correctly.
What does it mean by refit?
Fit the item that has been previously removed.
What does it mean by remove?
Remove the item and fit a new/or serviceable item.
What does it mean by replenish?
Refill or restock a tank, bottle or other container, to a predetermined level, pressure or quantity.
What does it mean by zonal survey?
A general visual examination of a specialised zone to detect damage, deterioration, and discrepancies and access the general condition of the zone.
What does it mean by test?
Undertake, using the appropriate test equipment, a critical trial or examination of one or more properties or characteristics of the item or system to make certain that it is serviceable.
What does it mean by loose articles?
Loose articles are classified as any items that have been dropped, lost, become detached or unaccounted for in and around the aircraft creating a potential hazard to the aircraft.
What are the typical loose articles found?
Typical items include, hand tools, pens, coins, nuts, bolts, washers and split pins.
What does it mean by foreign object debris (FOD)?
Any item or material, other than birds or wildlife, that originates from any source, either external to or part of an aircraft, and which then has the potential to cause damage.
What is the purpose of examination?
To find defects that can: reduce flight safety, decrease the life of a component, reduce performance.
What is the purpose of aircraft weighing?
To ensure the mass and C of G remain within limits.
What effects on the aircraft can occur by changing the C of G?
Handling
Performance and dangerously increase structural loads leading to increased fatigue and possible loss of aircraft.
What is basic weight?
Aircraft loaded with such items deemed to be included by the manufacture
What is the operating weight?
Basic weight plus role equipment fitted
What are the aircraft weighing occasions?
On completion of build
After a major service
After a major structural repair or modification
After a strip and respray
After a periodically detailed in the aircraft master maintenance schedule
At any time the C of G is suspected to be out of limits
What is the purpose of a lubricant?
Reduce friction
Reduce wear
Reduce heat
What are the types of lubricants?
Oils and grease.
When is grease used?
When it is difficult to prevent leaks
The advantages of grease to oil are:
It is cleaner and less likely to splash than oil
It requires a less complicated system than oil
What type of viscosity does thin and thick oil have?
Thin oil: low viscosity number
Thick oil: high viscosity number
As temperature increases and decreases what happens to the viscosity?
Increased - reduced viscosity
Decreased - increased viscosity
What are the 3 of ID of lubrication?
Joint service designation
NATO code
NATO stock number
What is the lubrication replenishment point symbol?
A black square
What are the lubrication operation methods?
Grease gun
Risbridger
Can fluid replenished
Oil can
