Chapter 3 - Undercarriage Flashcards
What are the undercarriage components of a skid type?
Skid tube Skid shoes Skid post Cross tubes Attachment fittings Pivot
What is the basic maintenance for an undercarriage?
Examination Surface finish restoration Wear check Lubrication Track check
What are the undercarriage components for a wheeled type?
Support tubes Oleos (shock absorbers) Axle Wheels Brake unit
What makes a brake unit?
Rotor disc and the brake pad calliper Unit
What components are there in a oleo pneumatic shock absorber?
Piston rod Cylinder Piston ram with holes Floating piston Air chamber fluid reservoir
What components does an aircraft wheel have?
Bearings
Hub (bearings are kept in here)
Inner tubes (mainly on old aircraft)
Tyres
What are the properties on the tyre?
Tread groove Linings Tread Sidewall Shoulder Beads Inner liner
What are the main faults with tyres?
Wet braking Shoulder wear Bulging Severe cuts Dry braking flat Chunking
What are the components of the nose undercarriage?
Caster lock
Caster lock release handle
Torque link
What are the steps for initial tyre inflation?
- Remove valve core, place wheel in safety cage, fit air supply to valve stem and Lock cage.
- Inflate tyre until bead sits against hub rim, DO NOT OVER INFLATE BEYOND THIS STAGE.
- Deflate tyre, fit valve core and inflate as slowly as reasonably practicable until normal working pressure is reached.
- Remove airline, fit valve cover and leave the wheel assembly in the inflation cage for a period of time as stipulated in the maintenance manual.
- Remove the tyre from the cage and carry out periodic static leak checks to ensure the tyre retains pressure.
What are the steps for routine tyre inflation?
- Remove valve cover and check pressure with gauge as detailed in the maintenance manual.
- Inflate tyre using portable or nitrogen servicing trolley. An adaptor must be fitted in between air/nitrogen source and tyre in order to have regulated control at point of inflation.
- Refit valve cover.
What are the requirements of a skid type undercarriage?
Support weight Lightness Strength Flexibility Ground handling
