Chapter 1 - the design process Flashcards
What is flight safety?
Describes a collective endeavour to operate in the air environment safely and embraces any activity that contributes to the safe operation of military airworthy systems in flight or on the ground.
What is the aim of flight safety?
To maximise operational capability by reducing those risks inherent in military aviation to a level as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).
what is airworthiness?
The ability of an aircraft or other airborne equipment or system to operate without significant hazard to aircrew, ground crew, passengers or to third parties; it is a technical attribute throughout its lifecycle.
What does CDCSS stand for and what are they responsible for?
Capability directorate combat support services. They are responsible for the engineering airworthiness of the aircraft.
What is DLL?
Design limit loads: derived from airworthiness requirements.
What is the proof load?
1.125 x DLL
Making sure it:
- has no permanent deformation
- can function the controls and the systems normally
What is DUL?
Design ultimate load. (DUL) - (1.5 x DLL)
The structure must not collapse. This will be operating towards its upper limits without failing.
How is static strength proved?
First, proof load and then to DUL in the critical design case.
Such static strength testing is carried out before the type is released to service.
Structural failure beyond DUL(as is usual) implies that the structural reserve factor is greater than 1.0.
What is flight flutter?
Flutter is a violent, destructive vibration of the aerofoil surface, caused by interaction of their inertia loads, aerodynamic loads and structural stiffness.
What operating conditions are there that can apply to aircraft?
Temperature
Corrosion
Environmental conditions
Natural hazards
What steps are taken for the military aircraft procurement?
- The idea
- Preliminary study
- Project definition
- Full development
- Acceptance and approval
- Production
