Medical abortion
Use before nine weeks - to stop the pregnancy from being viable
Emergency contraption (morning after pill)
Take it within five days of unprotected sex and the longer you wait the less effective it is
Why does abortion happen?
No money, physical health, not enough time/energy, job/education would be on hold, partner wants to have an abortion
Emotional statues of abortion
Guilt and sadness, stressed. And it depends on if she has a support system of a history of depression
How long is pregnancy?
40 weeks long or nine months
What happens to your body during pregnancy?
There is a huge spike in estrogen and progesterone - the blood volume doubles (because the estrogen makes the smooth muscles very elastic that’s why your blood pressure does not rise)
How long is each trimester?
About 13 weeks each trimester
What are physical symptoms of pregnancy?
Morning sickness, vomit, fatigue, breast tenderness, frequent urination,
First trimester of pregnancy
You don’t look pregnant and there is great fatigue
Second trimester of pregnancy
Start to show and the change in body can affect how she feels
What is quickening?
Occurs during the second trimester of pregnancy(about 20 weeks in) and you she is able to detect fetal movement and it sometimes feels like gas
Third trimester
Dramatic change in body, body becomes really distorted, difficult to move, sleep deprivation, a lot of fatigue
After giving birth
Less desire for sex, difficulty with urination control because a lot of muscles get stretched when you give birth,

Thinning and dialation of the cervix (1st stage)
It has to dialact to 10 cm and it can take days and can feel like cramps or labor contraction
Uterian contraction to push baby out (second stage of childbirth)
Baby is born and estrogen and progesterone drops dramatically

Gives shock to body because so low estrogen and progesterone and takes several months before it comes back to pre pregnancy level
Women over the age of 35
Fertility starts to decline at age 27 - they have more miscarriage and more complications during pregnancy - more likely to ha c-section,
Maternity blues
After child birth - depression (is mild) can last for a couple of days or a week and they feel sentimental, tearful
Post partam depression
Less common, more severe, can last from 6 weeks to 6-8 months, feeling low, anxious, panic attacks, this can be due to sleep deprivation, having a child to care for, lack of social support
Post parthm psychosis
Rare, they do things like say that the devil told them to drown their baby
Who is likely to get post panthm depression?
Women who are younger, less educated, poor, first time mothers, poor social support, history of depressive disorders
Infertility
The failure to conceive after a year of unprotected sex
Why does infertility happen?
Blockage of Filipian tubes, heavy smoking, heavy drinking, heavy caffeine consumption
How many abortions are there in the United States?
1/5 of all pregnancy end in abortion (850,000 in u.s per year) and half of the women who seek abortion already have children
Polycystc wary syndrome
Multiple cystc that forms that is often painful on her ovaries
Ectopic pregnancy
Occurs outside of the uterus in Filipion tube and is not a viable pregnancy and is the leading cause of pregnancy death - after six weeks the tube can’t hold the baby anymore and you won’t know because baby isn’t seen in the ultra sound
