Chapter 3 Theories (real Ones) Flashcards
Psychoanalytic theory
Freud - unconscious mind believes child development lays a foundation for adulthood and that children’s awareness of gender depended on their awareness of what they have (there are stages of this)
Electra complex
Self esteem with girls is their sexual attraction and they have a tendency to get jealous
Phallic stage
Becomes sexually attracted to mom
Identification with the aggressor
Young boy would take on ways to be like dad
Social learning theory
Attention and memory, ability to perform, motivation and things are seen and learn by observations
Gender scheme of theory
Social and cognitive theories are married here - idea that the brain classifies things and we will the boxes with roles that we have win our society
Cognitive development model
We need to look at the thought processes
Gender constancy
Gender is permanent and doesn’t change it occurs around ages four to seven once they understand their gender they’ll want to be around these people more
Gender scheme theory
This couple tried to not let social media or people outside influence the way that their kids view gender but it didn’t help because the environment and peers and media had too much of an influence that they could not control (Sandra)
Social interaction process (biopsychsocial theory)
Looks at most of our behavior is going to come with social, biological factors, and things that are more complex than one theory can explain
Feminist theories
View gender as something that is viewed as power relationships/hierarchy in society (it’s our power and society that controls this)
Sociobiology theory
Focus on a genetic basis for behavioral differences between the genders ex: promiscuity - across all cultures males have more sexual partners than woman and woman are also more invested in monogamy
