Arrest
Taking persons into custody and restraining them until they appear in court to answer the charges against them
Arraignment
Official proceeding in which defendant is formally confronted by criminal charges and enters a plea.
Bail
Surety provided by defendants to guarantee their appearance in court to face criminal charges
Bench trial
Tribunal where guilt or innocence is determined by a judge rather than a jury.
Booking
Process of making written report of arrest.
Bounty hunter
Monetary reward offered for capture of persons who escape prosecution from a given jurisdiction.
Cross examination
Questioning of one side’s witness by the other side’s attorney.
Direct examination
Questioning by an attorney of one’s own witness during a trial.
Exclusionary rule
A rule that prohibits the use of illegally obtained evidence in a criminal trial.
Expert witness
witness who has expertise or special knowledge in a relevant field pertaining to the case at trial.
Eyewitness
Persons who testify in court as to what they saw when the crime was committed.
Grand Jury
investigative bodies whose duties include determining probable cause and returning formal charges against suspects
Indictment
Charges or written accusations found and presented by a grand jury that a particular defendant probably committed a crime.
Information
Written accusations made by a public prosecutor against a person without an indictment.
Jury deliberation
Discussion among jury members attempting to arrive at a verdict.
Motions
Oral or written requests to a judge asking the court to make a specific ruling, finding, decision, or order.
Objections
Actions by either the prosecutor or defense requesting that certain questions not be asked of witness or that certain evidence should or should not be admitted.
Summation
Conclusionary remarks made by the prosecutor and defense counsel at the end of trial before the jury.
Trial
An adversarial proceeding within a particular jurisdiction in which defendant’s guilt or innocence can be decided by either a judge or jury.
Verdict
Decision by judge or jury concerning the guilt or innocence of a defendant.
Witnesses
Persons who have relevant information about the commission of a crime.
