chapter 6 skin and membranes Flashcards
Body Membranes
a thin, sheet like structure that may have many important functions in the body.
Membranes cover and protect..
he body surface, line body cavities, and cover the inner surfaces of the hollow organs such as the digestive, reproductive, and respiratory passageways.
two major categories or types of body membranes:
Epithelial tissue membranes, Connective tissue membrane
visceral means
organs
three types of epithelial tissue membranes in the body:
Cutaneous membrane,Serous membranes, Mucous membranes
Cutaneous membrane
The cutaneous membrane or skin, is the primary organ of the integumentary system. It fulfills the requirements necessary for an epithelial tissue membrane in that it has a superficial layer of epithelial cells and an underlying layer of supportive connective tissue.
Serous membranes
is composed of two distinct layers of tissue. The epithelial sheet is a thin layer of simple squamous epithelium.
Mucous membranes
-Mucous membranes contain an epithelial layer and a fibrous connective tissue layer.
Parietal
lines wall of body cavity
Visceral
covers organs within body cavity
Pericardium
parietal and visceral layers line a fibrous sac around the heart and a visceral layer covers the heart wall
Pleura
parietal and visceral layers line walls of thoracic cavity and cover the lungs
Peritoneum
parietal and visceral layers line walls of abdominal cavity and cover the organs in that cavity
Pleurisy
Inflammation of the serous membranes that line the chest cavity and cover the lungs
Peritonitis
Inflammation of the serous membranes in the abdominal cavity that line the walls and cover the abdominal organs
Connective tissue membranes
Do not contain epithelial componentsProduce a lubricant called synovial fluid.Connective tissue membranes are smooth and slick.Connective tissue membranes reduce friction between opposing surfaces of bones in movable joints.
The skin is the largest
organ of the body
The skin is also known as the
cutaneous membrane and is composed of the epidermis and dermis.
The skin, or cutaneous membrane, is a
sheet like organ composed of the following layers of distinct tissue
The epidermis is the outermost
layer of the skin. It is mad up of stratified squamous epithelium.
The dermis is the deeper
of the two layers. is it made up of connective tissue.
The layers of the skin are supported by a thick layer of
loose connective tissue and fat called subcutaneous tissue or the hypodermis
Two primary layers are called
epidermis and dermis
Epidermis
It is the Outermost and thinnest primary layer of skin
Stratum germinativum
Innermost(deepest) layer of cells that continually reproduce
As cells approach the surface, they are filled with a tough, waterproof protein called
keratin
Stratum corneum:
Outermost layer of keratin-filled cells
epidermal layer gives color
to the skin
Basal layer of stratum germinativum has pigment
producing melanocyte cells
The brown pigment melanin produced by melanocytes gives
skin a darker color
Cyanosis
bluish color of skin indicates decreased blood oxygen level
The term ___________ is used to describe the area where the skin and mucous membranes meet.
mucocutaneous junction
Pleurisy:
Inflammation of the serous membranes that line the chest cavity and cover the lungs
Peritonitis:
Inflammation of the serous membranes in the abdominal cavity that line the walls and cover the abdominal organs
