Chapter 6 - Shapes of molecules and Intermolecular forces Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
A compound that contains carbon and hydrogen only
Electronegativity
The ability of a bonded atom to attract the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond
Polar bond
When the bonded electron pair is shared unequally between the bonded atoms. Occurs when bonded atoms: are different or have different electronegativities
Non-polar bond
When the bonded electron pair is shared equally between the bonded atoms. Occurs when bonded atoms: are the same or have the same or similar electronegativity
London forces (Induced dipol-dipol interactions)
Weak, temporary intermolecular forces that exist between all molecules (Polar & Non-polar) and act between induced dipols in different molecules
Permanent dipol-dipol interactions
Intermolecular forces which act between the permenant dipols in different polar molecules
Hydrogen bonding
A special type of permanent dipol-dipol interaction found between hydrogen and either N,O or F. (must have a lone pair of electrons)
